2023 Practice Matches Quickfire Review: St Kilda vs Melbourne

Friday arvo at the Danny Frawley Centre saw the Sainters take on the Dees… As a Saints man, not great viewing on the scoreboard but thankfully no real damage done in what was a fairly one-sided affair! Plenty to look out for from a fantasy perspective!

*For the record, no fantasy scores available as yet… I imagine they will be published in the coming week and the article will be updated!*

Final Score

Melbourne 16.9 (105)

St Kilda 6.10 (46)

Let’s get in to the all important quickfire fantasy review!

St Kilda

Sinclair ($911K DEF) – Juicy. Roamed free at half back for three quarters doing as he pleased taking a few kick-ins and chaining up around the ground. Got a look on-ball in Q4 and didn’t miss a beat. Big tick!

Steele ($978K MID) – Solid as a rock attending most centre bounces. Cashed in with plenty of +6’s around the ground as the sting came out of the game! No concerns.

Marshall ($808K RUC) – #1 ruck but had Max Heath giving him a chop out after Tom Campbell withdrew late due to the birth of his child… Again, this one will come down to if Ross the Boss picks a second ruck. St Kilda seemed to be trialling the likes of Cordy and even Dougal Howard at FF at times throughout the game given their depleted forward stocks!

Phillipou ($282K MID/FWD) – Quiet early playing as a forward but showed glimpses late. Looks to be a great user and popped up on multiple occasions to snag two late goals! Keen to see more of this kid over the coming weeks from a fantasy perspective. Based on that role, I don’t think I am sold just yet.

Midfield Mix: Steele, Crouch, Gresham, Clark, Windhager (Q3/Q4), Sinclair (Q4).

Kick-Ins: Sinclair, Wanganeen-Milera, Wilkie, Webster, Stocker.

Notable Absentees: Max King, Jack Hayes, Tim Membrey, Zac Jones.

Melbourne

Oliver ($994K MID) – Just Oli doing Oli things sporting the loooooong hair. Silky through the middle, he’s the prime mover in that engine room expect more of the same in 2023.

Petracca ($908k MID) – Started forward and had stints on ball in a clinical display. He seemed to pop up as the connector between the arcs and cashed in on bulk +6’s! I doubt he will be afforded that kind of freedom in the season proper but it was ominous signs… His role will be one to watch over the coming weeks!

Grundy ($830K RUC) – Solid without being outstanding. Couldn’t seem to clunk any grabs around the ground which hurts his scoring potential! Did kick a nice goal late but at this stage I am staying away from Brodie.

Gawn ($914K RUC)Started in the ruck but of course shared with Grundy. Buttered up all over the ground for many +6’s and was a threat forward of the ball snagging a couple of goals. Was the pick of the Melbourne rucks.

Pickett ($497K FWD) – Started in the centre bounce and got plenty of opportunity on the inside… His speed and defensive pressure were a feature. Bit of a smoky at $497K but you can guarantee someone out there will take a punt on him!

Brayshaw ($878K DEF)0 CBA’s. Hard to fathom given how good he was in there late last season. He probably had 50 Fantasy points to QT, taking the mickey out of the Saints! That role is an issue though and I wouldn’t be surprised if his ownership drops as a result.

Midfield Mix: Oliver, Viney, Kozi Pickett, Harmes, Petracca, Sparrow (Q2/Q3/Q4).

Kick-Ins: May, Bowey.

Notable Absentees: Christian Salem, Jake Melksham (Steve May’s best mate), Bailey Fritsch, Luke Dunstan.
