2023 Practice Matches Quick Fire Review: Carlton vs Collingwood

It was the old rivals going toe-to-toe in a Friday morning fixture at Ikon Park. In the end, it was the Blues who got the choccies making the most of kicking with the wind in Q1/Q3. From a fantasy perspective, a lot to be excited about!

*For the record, no fantasy scores available as yet… I imagine they will be published in the coming week and the article will be updated!*

Final Score:

Carltank 12.12 (84)

Collingwood 11.8 (74)

Without further ado, let’s get into the quick fire fantasy review!

Carlton

Docherty (977K DEF) – Started down back getting plenty of touches behind the ball before getting his hands dirty in the second half as part of Carlton’s midfield mix. Role is a huge tick!

Cripps ($903K MID) – Industrious as always playing that mid/fwd role. Had multiple scoring shots, again showing his prowess forward of the ball. Sent a scare through the Blues camp late after rolling his ankle but Carlton are playing it down.

Cerra ($780K MID) – Carlton didn’t dick around with their midfield mix and it’s fair to say Cerra was everywhere! A real feature was Cerra’s ability to get involved in forward chains, adding plenty of +6’s throughout the day. A bit of a smoky in classic but definitely a draft slider to keep an eye on.

Cowan ($242K DEF) – Did some one say “Zac Williams replacement?” Pick #30 from last years draft looked every bit up to the level playing in Carlton’s back six. The Tassie product was solid in defence for the Blues, impressing with his intercept game and more importantly for fantasy coaches, buttering up for +6’s throughout the game. Unsurprisingly his ownership has spiked on the back of this performance as he pushes for a round 1 debut.

Hollands ($280K MID) – Carlton’s top pick in the 2022 draft got better as the game wore on, showing his aerobic capacity and was able to accumulate around the ground. Still very raw so I wouldn’t bank on him playing regularly early – however, I’d love to be proved wrong!

Midfield Mix: Cripps, Cerra, Hewett, Kennedy, Docherty (2nd half).

Kick-Ins: Saad, Newman, Plowman.

Collingwood

N.Daicos ($769K DEF) Gee he’s put on some size over the preseason… In typical Daicos fashion, got plenty of the pill playing off half back and also in the guts which will please coaches far and wide! I reckon it was about a 60-40 split mid to defence. His running capacity and burst out of stoppage will hold Nick in good stead as he continues to increase his midfield minutes. At $769K, 48% of coaches have locked him in already. I expect his ownership to rise in the coming days based on that showing.

Mitchell ($853K MID) Mid role, tick. Mitchell started at centre bounce and whilst not overly effective with his possessions (as fantasy coaches we don’t care about this!), accumulated plenty of ball. Nothing in this performance scares me off!

Cameron ($725K RUC/FWD) – Got up to play after a recent minor hamstring concern… Cox started in the ruck and probably did >50% of the ruck duties throughout the day. Concerning but probably due to the injury coming in.

Chief Minister Billy Frampton ($542K DEF) – Played.

Midfield Mix: Mitchell, De Goey, Pendles, N.Daicos, J.Daicos, Elliott, Adams, Lipinski.

Kick-Ins: Moore, Maynard, N.Daicos, Howe, Noble.

Genuinely horses for courses from Collingwood!
